Brandon Nelson is traveling around the world for the Volvo Ocean Race as part of the PUMA Event Retail team. He recently arrived in Abu Dhabi for the third stopover of this year’s race.
Before the race village opened, Brandon visited Ferrari World on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. Ferrari World is the world’s largest indoor theme park, housed under a 200,000 sq meter roof. The structure is quite amazing, almost appearing like a giant red and silver UFO.
Brandon was strapped into the F1 cockpit of Formula Rossa – the world's fastest roller coaster, reaching a top speed of 240 kilometres per hour (nearly 150 mph) and 4.8 Gs. The coaster train accelerates to its top speed in approximately 4.9 seconds using a hydraulic launch system that generates a release velocity similar to an aircraft carrier steam catapults. The track is 2.2km (1.4 mi) in length, ranking it the sixth-longest in the world. Due to the high air speeds and risk of an impact with airborne particulates or insects, riders in the front are required to wear protective glasses similar to those used during skydiving. Word to the wise, sit in the back.
If riding the world’s faster roller coaster wasn’t enough, Brandon also had a chance to view the Ferrari dream cars. As Ezo Ferrari once said, “The Ferrari is a dream – people dream of owning this special vehicle and for most people it will remain a dream apart from for those lucky few.”
Here’s to dreaming Brandon.
