Usain Bolt wins third Laureus World Sports Award

He did it again! PUMA sprinting sensation and Fastest Man in the world Usain Bolt was honored as the sportsman of the year at the 2013 Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony in Rio de Janeiro on Monday night – his third Laureus World Sports Award after 2009 and 2010.

Usain beat out a star-studded field of nominees including British Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins, four-time FIFA world player of the year Lionel Messi and German F1 ace Sebastian Vettel and received the top individual prize again after another outstanding Olympic performance in London, where he won gold in the 100 and 200 meter sprints and also set the world record in the 4x100-meter relay with his Jamaican teammates.

"This last season was a tough year," said Bolt who was not there in person to receive the award at Rio's Theatro Municipal but appeared via a hologram. Holding the trophy in his hands, Bolt promised to defend his Olympic titles at the 2016 Rio Games: "Definitely I will be here in 2016."

The winners of the awards are chosen by the Laureus World Sports Academy, a jury made up of 46 sports stars. The prizes were established thirteen years ago. The academy gives the awards in seven categories at an annual gala ceremony.
