Simon Shaw Joins French Club Toulon!

PUMA and England’s 19 stone, man-mountain lock yesterday confirmed a one year deal with Top 14 side Toulon after 13 seasons and 339 matches with London Wasps in the English Premiership.

Simon will join a star-studded XV that currently sit 4th in the French top flight and include England’s iconic number ten and a whole host of World Cup stars. During his illustrious career at Wasps, Shaw managed to capture the Premiership title on four occasions, the Heineken Cup twice and the Pilkington Cup (Anglo-Welsh) once having scored 98 points and 19 tries and was crowned Premiership Player of the Year in 2003-04.

Simon’s success has come as a result of his incredible strength in all aspects of play, grappling work at the breakdown, mauling game and natural ability as a lineout jumper (being 6ft 8in tall probably helps)! Unfortunately, the “Gentle Giant’s” career has been blighted by serious injuries – the worst of which involving a double dislocation fracture of his ankle at the age of 22 that threatened his entire career.

Still, Shaw’s fighting spirit in the face of such adversity have made him a hungrier rugby player who now boasts a World Cup Winners medal and an MBE honour from the Queen!! Simon will no doubt be looking to close out his magnificent career on a high with hopes of securing Heineken Cup qualification with Toulon this season and an improved national performance from England in the Six Nations next March.
