Yesterday saw five-time World Player of the Year Marta and her Brazilian teammates kick off their debut with a 1-0 win against a well organized Australian team, who matched them throughout the game. The match saw 27,258 fans pack into Germany's Borussia Park, Moenchengladbach. PUMA was well represented with 9 players on show for Brazil in Marta, Andreia, Rosana, Formiga, Ester, Maurine, Erika, Christiana and Fabiana.
Brazil started with all intention to attack, playing only 3 at the back with Marta leading the 3 attackers up front. However, this plan was not as successful as the Brazilians had expected as the Australians matched their play and although both teams saw opportunities, the first half ended 0-0.
The second half kicked off very well for Brazil. In the 54th minute, an Australian defensive mix up was capitalized on as Christiana headed a ball through to Rosana who took one touch to pass a defender and unleashed a shot past the Australian keeper. The goal slowed the game and Australia failed to find the rhythm that had created so many opportunities for them in the second half. At the end of the game, Rosana stressed the importance of teamwork in their win: "I'd like to dedicate it to my teammates because it was just as important to get a goal today as not let one in."
Brazil will play again on July 3rd against Norway. Who do you think will come out ahead for this match?
