It's all about the love

Why does this beautiful game of ours stir such emotion within? Some would argue that the answer to this question is long and complex, based on man’s tribal nature and the inner workings of the mass collective consciousness (are your eyes feeling heavy yet?) But the answer is simple. We love football. It touches us in a way that nothing else can. It’s our love that causes us to live every second and bite every nail. It’s our passion that permanently etches every kick and every goal in our minds. But she can be a cruel mistress. Loving us one minute and disappointing us the next. And yet we keep coming back for more. We’re addicted. It’s a love that never stops.

Love for football is at the heart of the whole PUMA family. And we’ve taken great pride in watching our teams and players achieve fantastic success this season. Newcastle have been the dark horses of the Premier League, securing fifth place and Europa league football next season. The Toon’s electrifying campaign was typified by pacey, attacking football and it’s been a pleasure watching them kick things up a notch this campaign.

Moving to the rest of Europe, Olympiacos won the Super league and Greek Cup double taking their tally to 39 league titles and 25 Greek cups. They’re the most successful team in Greek history and we’d like to say Συγχαρητήρια! (That’s congratulations to all the non-Greeks out there.) Speaking of successful teams, we need to give a massive shout out to Dinamo Zagreb on bagging the Prva HNL title and the Croatian Cup. That’s number 14 and 12 respectively, making them the most decorated team in Croatian history.
But it’s not always just about winning. Apoel Nicosia took the Champions League by storm, getting to the quarter-finals on their debut outing in the tournament. They’re a credit to the game and we think they’ll go from strength to strength in the years to come. We also have to send massive love to Sporting CP. Reaching the semi-final of the Europa League is a brilliant achievement and we’re proud of the whole team.

As we all know, great teams are made up of great players. And we couldn’t wrap up the season without reaching out to a few guys that have been shining out there on the pitch. Congrats to De Jong and Yaya on winning the Premier league. And a massive Congratulazioni goes out to Buffon, Chiellini and Lichtsteiner on bagging the Scudetto. We’d also like to add a gut gamacht (meaning well done) to Subotic, Weidenfeller and Lucas Barrios on their Bundasliga and German Cup haul.

Now, we love every PUMA player. But there are one or two that we think deserve an extra special mention. Falcao A.K.A el Tigre has been a revelation. He netted 24 times in la Liga and his 12 goals (including 2 sublime finishes in the final) helped crown Atlético Europa League Champions. The icing on the cake? He’s also won back-to-back golden boots in the tournament. The whole world was watching as Sergio ‘Kun’ Agüero’s ice-cold extra time finish sent the blue side of Manchester into La La land. And it was the perfect end to a sublime season. Kun scored 23 goals in the Premier league and, coming back from injury, he was instrumental in city’s push for the title. He was also voted Player of the Year by city fans. Kun, we’ve got mad love for you and we can’t wait to see what you do next campaign.

Turning to the French Ligue 1, Olivier Giroud was on fire this season, ending joint top scorer and helping Montpellier to their first ever league title. He’s been banging in goals for fun and aged just 25, the best is yet to come from the French striker. We’d also like to give a special mention to Mario Gomez. Super Mario has been a beast in front of goal, scoring 26 times in the Bundesliga and 12 times in the Champions league. Cool, calm and collected, Gomez is a true predatory finisher.

Finally, we’d like to congratulate Cesc on his return to Barcelona. In his first season back he became the first player in the club’s history to score in his first four la liga games. Relishing his more advanced role, Fábregas scored eight times this season and provided eight assists. We can’t wait to see more creative flair in the future.

Well that’s it for 2011-2012. We’re not sure exactly what will happen next season.

But there’s one thing we do know. We’re going to love every minute of it.
