The ocean is very wide and very deep and covers most of the Earth's surface. For a long time, people thought that the oceans were so big that you could dump all the trash you wanted into it and it would never be a problem again. Sadly, people have been dumping trash into the oceans for hundreds of years, and it really is a problem! Most of the trash doesn't come from ships, but comes from people on the land.
Plastic floating in the ocean is dangerous for animals living there. Sea birds such as albatrosses may try eating the plastic and even feed it to their babies. Turtles living in the water may become tangled in plastic, making it hard for them to swim or eat.
Marmo's Tip: Ask your parents to recycle as much plastic trash as possible, and ask that they use reusable bags rather than plastic bags at stores. Never litter, especially at the beach. Lastly, don't forget to share what you know about plastic pollution with others!
