Copa Libertadores Final Preview

Tonight Uruguayan side Penarol take on Brazilian heavyweights Santos in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores Cup final. We’re expecting another close fought, patient and tactical encounter following last week’s 0-0 draw in Montevideo which keeps the tie finely balanced.

Penarol coach Diego Aguirre has the luxury of a near full strength squad to choose from and is expected to stick with his counter-attacking game plan and look to maintain his side’s shape at all times. The Penarol coach knows exactly what it takes to win the Copa Libertadores, having scored the winning goal when Penarol last won the trophy some 24 years ago. Aguirre will be hoping his players step up to the plate tonight and that history can repeat itself for the Uruguayans.

Penarol have enjoyed a fantastic run to the final recording famous victories over Velez Sarsfield, Universidad Catolica and defending champions Internacional. The club were a real force in South American football during the 60s and 80s and won five Copa Libertadores success during this period. However, Penarol fans have been starved of Copa Libertadores in recent years and victory this evening would finally allow the club to emerge from the shadows of its rivals. Aguirre added: ''It would be unbelievable to win the sixth title, it would add another page in the history books for us.''

Santos, boasting a star studded line-up will start the game as favourites in front of their home fans, but Aguirre is remaining optimistic. ''I have confidence in Penarol,'' he said. ''We deserve to be in the final, as does Santos. It's going to be a great final, very exciting.''

We’re backing Penarol for their sixth Copa Libertadores – are you?
