International Round-up

Another exhilarating weekend of international football witnessed some fantastic results for PUMA teams, edging several sides closer to European and African Cup of Nations qualification. Here’s our round-up of the biggest fixtures:

Italy The Azzuri thumped Estonia 3-0 to leave them five points clear of the chasing pack in Group C of the qualifying table for the European Championship. The Italian captain hailed the win as a great way to end the season, noting the side’s success as a by-product of a new and expansive playing style similar to that of the World Champions.

Ghana The Black Stars confirmed their position at the head of Group I with a competent victory over Congo on Friday evening. The Congolese side finally gave way to sustained Ghanaian pressure in the second half and conceded in the 62nd minute. Two quality strikes from young debutants sealed the win and will no doubt please the manager in preparation for next year’s finals.

Switzerland The Swiss performed with a confidence belying their position in the middle of Group G, holding England to a draw away from home in front of a strong travelling contingent of fans.  The Swiss side shocked the Premier League’s finest by taking a two goal lead from set pieces in the first half. The deficit was quickly reduced by a clear penalty offence and levelled early on in the second. Switzerland deservedly earned a point and will look forward to their next home clash with Bulgaria in September.

And finally...

Mario Gomez PUMA football star “Super” Mario continued his impressive international goal to game ratio for Germany with two clinical finishes against a resilient Austrian side at Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna. Gomez left it late with a commanding 89th minute header to guide his team to a 2-1 victory and almost certain qualification for Euro 2012.
