Casey Smith is happy, with a job and family that he loves. Before every journey, his partner makes him a photo album which he takes on board as his good luck charm.

Smith joined the crew of PUMA’s il mostro for the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09 as one of the under 30’s. Smith was instrumental in repairing il mostro’s rudder during the last race, specifically during the Leg 7 transatlantic crossing, and was honored with the seamanship award. Smith has also sailed numerous Sydney-Hobart races and transatlantic crossings.

Smith can often be found wearing only his harness, working on board il mostro. He says being “free and natural” also makes him happy, so long as he wears extra sunblock.

Smith hopes to find a few karaoke spots on the new race route and promises that if he does, he will perform a Johnny Cash song – clothing optional, naturally.
